Learning objectives
It will be acquired theoretical knowledge regarding the origin, development, and role of the immune cell of the central nervous system, the microglial cell. The distinct phenotypic changes and functional differences of the microglial cell from the homeostatic to the activated state in response to insults and pathological conditions, specifically in neurodegenerative diseases and aging, will be examined. Furthermore, the most common techniques for its characterization (histological and cytofluorimetric techniques) will be introduced.

Program
- the origin, development and role of the microglial cell - phenotypic changes and functional differences of the microglial cell from the homeostatic state to that activated in response to insults and in pathological conditions, specifically in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the aging process - basic techniques for the characterization of the microglial cell: histological and flow cytometric techniques.
