Learning outcomes
Attraverso l’approfondimento monografico di una particolare tipologia di monumenti antichi (gli edifici per spettacoli) il corso mira a fornire le seguenti principali abilità: - applicare un approccio metodologico interdisciplinare nella lettura e interpretazione storico-artistica dell’antico; - contestualizzare nel quadro storico e socio-economico le manifestazioni artistiche della civiltà greco-romana; - evidenziare lo sviluppo diacronico delle tecniche e degli stili, le forme culturali sottese alle scelte artistiche e il ruolo della committenza; - storicizzare la trasformazioni dei monumenti antichi per coglierne l’eredità e gli effetti fin nel presente. Le principali conoscenze acquisite saranno: - le tipologie degli spettacoli nel mondo greco e romano come sono note dalle fonti letterarie, epigrafiche e iconografiche e in relazione alla società e alla cultura del tempo; - gli aspetti architettonici e tecnici della classe dei teatri, anfiteatri, circhi/ippodromi e stadi nel mondo greco e romano; - i loro apparati decorativi (elementi architettonici e statuari); - la loro ubicazione in rapporto allo spazio urbano; - la loro evoluzione nelle città postclassiche
Program
The course offers a focused study of the funeral contexts and funeral monuments in Greek and Roman times.
- In the first part (14 hours) we address the study of Greek and Roman funeral contexts and funeral monuments by means of the integrated analysis of various types of source (literary, epigraphic, archaeological and historico-artistic). Topics highlighted include the architectural aspects of the funeral monuments, their decoration, their inscriptions, the location of the necropolis in the city, the grave goods, the rites etc. In the second part (8 hours) we address the study of anthropological, paleobotanical, chemical etc. analyses of the funeral contexts and the methodology for analizing and documenting the grave goods during the excavation. In the third part (8 hours) we’ll analyze some exemples of funeral contexts in Gallia Cisalpina (with oral presentations by the students) and we’ll visit some sites and monuments.
The first part of the course will consist of lectures while the second will consist of seminars and the educational trips to be agreed upon at the beginning of the course.
Lectures will be broadcast via videoconferencing. They will also be recorded and available to registered students. Further, the lecture PowerPoints will be made available to students by way of the online teaching.
The material provided by the teacher (lecture PowerPoints) should be combined with study of a text chosen from amongst those that will be presented in class and listed on the first slide of each lecture.
Examination Methods
The exam is intended to assess the extent of achievement of the learning outcomes described above.
The oral exam will consist of several questions about the general part of the course and the educational visits (this part will account for 40% of the final grade). There will also be an essay on one specific funeral context in Roman Cisalpine chosen by the student (this part will account for 60% of the final grade).
