The purpose is to identify the main aspects that distinguish the Byzantine art, developed into the Bosporus capital, but also the artistic languages present in the other regions of the empire.
Program
>Topics
The works of art in Byzantine territories will be investigated by chronological order, in according to the evolution of language in the eastern area:
- the early byzantine era, from the founding of the capital to the revival of Justinian I;
- the golden age of byzantine art;
- the age of Iconoclasm;
- the Macedonian Renaissance and the Comnenian phase;
- the late byzantine era, from the reconquest of Constantinople to the Palaeologi.
To ensure a correct approach to the phenomena of Byzantine art, it will be taken into consideration works of art executed in the main techniques, trying to identify their material, iconographic and stylistic characters.
>Didactic methods
The course is based on lectures held by the teacher, in which are also planned discussions with the students on specific issues. There will be some visits to works of art related to the topics of the course.
The course materials (program, lessons, important communications, etc.) will be uploaded to the university e-learning/Moodle site at the end of a specific group of lessons. All the students, both attending and non-attending, will have to enrol in the university platform site to gain access to the course and to support the exam.
