German linguistics LM (2018/2019)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning outcomes
Part I
Expected results:
At the end of the course the students will be able to:
- Analyze the phrasal structures of the German language using the proper tools of the generative grammar model.
- To appreciate the value of the theoretical explanation in order to: i) distinguish between grammatical norm and description of "linguistic competence"; ii) open a new perspective of comparative.
Part II
Expected results:
- Apply the linguistic analysis skills (acquired during the course) to dialectal variation, with particular reference to the Cimbrian variety spoken in Trentino.
- Evaluate the importance of theoretical analysis for the development of a grammatical norm.
Program
PART I (Tomaselli)
Grammar and linguistic theory - syntax. The program will focus on the following phenomena: typological word order variations (SOV/SVO), V2 restriction, impersonal subjects, clitic syntax. Descriptive Grammar will represents the starting point to make a clear distinction between a traditional grammatical approach and a theoretical approach based on the concept of linguistic competence.
The seminar is taught in German and English, depending on students' language competence.
PART II (Padovan)
Grammar and linguistic theory – Standard versus dialect (in particular the Cimbrian variety of Lusern), with reference to pronominal syntax and verb movement.
Classes will be held in both German and English depending on the language competence of the students
TEIL 1 (Tomaselli)
