L-FIL-LET/09 - ROMANCE PHILOLOGY AND LINGUISTICS

Learning outcomes

The course of Romance Philology, through the reading and analysis of literary texts in various romance languages, will enable the student to acquire and develop important knowledge in the fields of philology, historical linguistics and literature. It will also enable the learner to refine his / her interpretation’s skill and understanding applied to literary texts and to elaborate important historical and cultural judgment. At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate that he / she can master the different levels of analysis that will be applied to the texts. The student must also demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary vocabulary and exhibit the contents with language properties.

Program

The course will be in French and will be divided into two parts.
   
a. Elements of textual criticism; elements of critique génétique: it is proposed to give an idea of ​​the methodology to arrive at the critical edition of a text. The part of critique génétique aims at studying the manuscripts of modern and contemporary authors in order to better understand the "paths" of their creation.
b. Interpretation of a text in middle French. This second part (2CFU) will be held by a visiting professor, Mrs Sylvie Lefèvre of the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne.

Antoine de La Sale, Jean de Saintre: a "nouveau roman" of the fifteenth century in front of modern criticism

In 1970, the young Julia Kristeva invented her literary semiology and applied it to a work of 1456, largely unknown outside the specialists of the Middle Ages. She then considered Jean de Saintre the "first French novel written in prose". What remains from this provocative reading today? Does the history of the long reception of the text (printed in the 16th century, rewritten by the Count of Tressan in the 18th century, echoes until the end of the 19th century) explain the choice made by the semiologist? How do literary history and current criticism evaluate this work of an author often described as both innovative for literary forms and old-fashioned for the values ​​defended?

Examination Methods

Final oral examination.
The oral examination aims at evaluating the student's knowledge, with special reference to the texts read during the lectures; general knowledge of the companions in use will be checked, as well. The final evaluation will be established considering student's knowledge, and his capacity to answer in a clear, appropriate and convincing way.
