Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate a mastery of knowledge and skills relative to the acquisition of second and foreign languages, with particular emphasis on the aspects concerning language teaching and the related pedagogical aspects.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- know in depth the psycholinguistic and cognitive mechanisms underlying the acquisition of second languages and the main theories developed in the field of the Second Language Acquisition;
- know how to translate this knowledge into practice, applying it appropriately to the teaching context;
- develop a capacity for critical judgment regarding the different teaching practices that can be adopted in second language teaching, also in presence of specific language or learning disabilities.

Program

The first part of the course will focus on the illustration of the cognitive and psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying the acquisition of second languages, with particular reference to individual variables, such as age of acquisition, cross-linguistic interference, attitude, motivation and emotional factors. The most recent and accredited theories developed in the context of the Second Language Acquisition will therefore be presented in a critical manner, which will be discussed during classes emphasizing both positive and problematic aspects.
In the second part of the course, these theoretical aspects will be transposed into practice, analyzing the various teaching techniques that can be used for teaching languages in different contexts. Finally, aspects related to the acquisition of languages in atypical contexts will be taken into consideration, as in the presence of specific language and learning disabilities (dyslexia) that may require more specific and appropriate lines of intervention.

Attending and non-attending students are invited to read the detailed program, the slides of the lectures and further materials published on the e-learning page of the course.

Examination Methods

The exam will verify the theoretical and practical skills acquired by the students during the course.
The exam consists of a written test lasting 1:30 hours and will include open-ended and multiple-choice questions on the theoretical part, as well as discussion of practical cases based on what was discussed in class during the lessons.
The questions will therefore focus on all the topics of the program, both those discussed in class during the lessons and which will be made available on the e-learning platform, and those prepared independently by the students on the indicated texts.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as an online oral exam.

The exams will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- substantial correctness of the answers and exhaustiveness of the contents;
- expressive clarity, argumentative ability and knowledge of the specific language of the subject.
The evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths. The exam will not be differentiated for attending and non-attending students.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
