Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this seminar students should be able to apply the metodology of Generative Grammar to the analysis of German sentence. They should also be able to recognize the importance of theoretical explanations for both : i) recognize the processes of normalization of linguistic structures and ii) appreciate the relevance of the comparative approach (Italian-German/German-English/English-own mother tongue).

Program

Grammar and linguistic theory - syntax. The program will focus on the following phenomena: a) typological word order variations (SOV/SVO); b) V2 restriction (V to C movement); c) impersonal subjects; d) clitic syntax.
Descriptive Grammar will represents the starting point to make a clear distinction between a traditional grammatical approach and a theoretical approach based on the concept of linguistic competence.
The seminar is taught in German and English, depending on students' language competence.

Grammatik und linguistische Theorie – Schwerpunkt Syntax. Folgende Phänomene werden in Betracht genommen: a) OV/VO Typologie; b) V2 Restriktion (V to C); c) unpersönliche Subjekte; d) Klitiksyntax.
Die deskriptive Grammatik wird als Schnittstelle zwischen der traditionellen Perspektive (normative Grammatik) und der theoretischen Analyse eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
