MED/01 - MEDICAL STATISTICS
Period
1 SEMESTRE PROFESSIONI SANITARIE dal Oct 3, 2022 al Dec 23, 2022.
Learning objectives
The course aims at providing knowledge that helps students to read and interpret the descriptive statistics reported in scientific articles. Students will learn to: evaluate the reliability of biomedical measurements; appropriately describe the information collected on a group of patients; calculate the probability of one or more events.
Program
INTRODUCTION
Use of statistics in medicine.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
Measurement and measurement scales - Precision and accuracy of a measurement procedure - Statistical variables and their representation by frequency distributions: tables and graphs with one or two variables - Measure of central tendency (arithmetic mean, geometric mean, median, mode, percentiles) - Measures of dispersion (range, interquartile range, deviance, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation) - Pearson's correlation coefficient.
PROBABILITY
Classical, frequentist, and subjective interpretations of probability - Calculation of probabilities: rule of addition and rule of product - Independent and conditional probabilities.
PREVENTION, SCREENING AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Primary, secondary, tertiary prevention - Validity and performance of a diagnostic test.
Probability distributions for continuous variables and confidence intervals.
Bibliography
Learning assessment procedures
Written test with multiple-choice questions and exercises. The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
