Program

The course aims to provide students with an overview of the complex organizational structure that makes up the management and protection system of the Italian artistic and cultural heritage.
During the first part, the various aspects linked to the museum context will be analyzed, starting from the meaning of "cultural heritage" and the birth and evolution of the term "museum" to arrive at the definition coined by ICOM and adopted by the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape. We will briefly retrace the origins of the different types of Italian museums, highlighting the differences in the formation of collections and their management, and we will evaluate the tasks, legal and institutional duties, and marketing strategies adopted by museums.
We’ll explore the various professional figures who work within museums and analyze which training courses are necessary to access the national list of professionals created by Mibac with Ministerial Order D.M. 244, 20th May 2019.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to the fundamental role played by private foundations and bank foundations, which have become legal entities and tools for managing cultural heritage with specificities, which often operate in synergy with the public sector.
Finally, a focus will be dedicated to temporary exhibitions and cultural initiatives that perform a priority function in advancing studies and the diffusion of knowledge. They’ve got strategic importance in the short and long-term planning of each "cultural company." The student will be able to discover how an exhibition is constructed, from the idea to its practical realization, and which professionals work behind the scenes, from the curator to the registrar.
In addition to the bibliographic material (the definitive bibliography will be confirmed at the beginning of the course), the PowerPoint slides will be shown during the lessons, and any PDFs or in-depth texts commented on during the lessons will be provided. These materials will be uploaded to the teaching Moodle page.

Didactic methods

The lessons will be held in the classroom with the help of in-depth texts, videos, and PowerPoint projections. The students will be actively involved during the lessons and according to the topics covered, with moments of subject analysis, annotated readings, and small independent and group research work.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be an oral interview with questions related to the program covered and with a grade expressed in thirtieths (see the evaluation criteria).
In the oral interview, knowledge of the various topics indicated in the program will be assessed, based on the indicated bibliography and the materials provided through the course Moodle page.
In the first hours of the course, the methods and types of the exam will be illustrated in detail.
The program and the exam methods will not present differences between attending and non-attending students.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
