Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to give the students the basic knowledge of the processes that lead to the resolution of a three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules through X-ray crystallography.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prior knowledge is required.
A knowledge on Basic Biology is suggested.
Program
The course will start with an historical overview on three-dimensional structure determination for proteins and other biological macromolecules and, starting from the theory of protein crystallization, shows the techniques most widely used by the international crystallographic community, up to the very novel methods applied. The second part is more on theory of x-ray diffraction and macromolecular structure determination methods. The teacher will guide the participants through this path with practical examples and will stimulate discussion on the topics of interest by presenting real problems to which a solution can be found.
Lessons will be held on 5 and 6 March 2024, from 9:00 am to 12:00 am, at the Department of Neuroscience, Biomedicine and Movement, Section of Biological Chemistry, classroom Suzuki, mezzanine floor, block B.
Didactic methods
Teachers will use frontal lessons and they will stimulate the interaction with students. Didactic material useful to the course will be uploaded on the Moodle page of the course in pdf format.
The possibility of following the lessons in streaming will be granted only to those students with severe disabilities and absolutely unable to attend the classroom, through prior agreement with the teacher.
