Program

The module is organized around three interconnected leading themes: social identity, social context, and social action. Groups provide people with a sense of who they are – and who they are not – and much of what happens between and within groups can be understood in terms of people's attempts to express, clarify or defend their social identity. But social identities are not immutable entities that accompany us as they are throughout life, but emerge from particular social contexts when people try to understand their social world and react to it. Not least, groups are a vital tool of social action, something that can often help people change things around them.
1. The reality of groups: definitions; relationship between individuals and groups
2. Formation and other elementary processes of groups: interdependence, social categorization
3. Agreement and disagreement in groups: norms, processes of influence, group decisions
4. Innovation and change in groups
5. Effectiveness in groups: productivity and decision-making processes
6. Morality in groups: aggression, collective violence, helping behaviors
7. Conflict and inequality: intergroup relations, realistic conflict, dehumanization,
8. Rebellion and social change: Anger and rejection of the status quo, SIT , Collective Action
9. When Groups Meet: Intergroup Contact and Reducing Prejudice, the Challenges of Diversity and Multiculturalism

Further information and specifications both on the activities and on the exam will be communicated both in class and on the Moodle page of the Course Module.
