Introduction to the approach that are typical of social sciences in the study of health/disease issues and sociology of medicine.


Module: PSICOLOGIA CLINICA

How to collect useful clinical information
Building the relationship with the patient
Explanation, planning and sharing decisions
Develop personal awareness during clinical consultations

An overall curriculum of doctor-patient communication skills will be presented, in terms of

a. How to structure a medical consultation
b. How to collect bio-psyco-social information
c. How to build doctor-patient relationship
d. How to give information and build up a common ground with the patient

Content:
a. Factors related to cure and care
b. the bio-psyco-social model
c. Emotions and non-verbal comunication
d. Attachment theory, motivational systems and the role of interpersonal relationships
e. Evidences on the role of doctor-patient communication
f. Self awareness and burn-out
g. How to deal difficult relationships with patients.
h. The“Process Model of Stress and Coping”.

Issues during this year's course are the following:
- relationships between social sciencea and medicine; how bio-medicine affects social science theories and research;how social scienceds affect medical theories and related behaviors;
- social research and humanistic outcome measures: patient-reported outcomes (PRO); quality of life (QoL) and clinical research;
- Examples of specifically applications.

Clinical Psychology, (to cure, to care), the bio-psyco-social model of illness.
Patient-centred approach, the structure of the consultation, doctor and patient agenda. How to collect information
Emotions and non-verbal communication
Attachment theroy, motivational systems and their role in interpersonal relationships
How to inform, educate and involve the patient. How to deal with “difficult” relationships with patients and families. How to break "bad news"
Patients with unexplained symptoms. How to deal with them. The reattribution model.
The“Process Model of Stress and Coping”.
Self awareness. “Burn out”
