Module: CHIRURGIA GENERALE

The student will be able to perform the diagnostic process about the most frequent surgical disorders, to do the indication to surgery and to understand the main principles of the most common surgical techniques. Moreover he/she will be capable of interpreting the functional changes and clinical pictures about the most frequent post-surgical syndromes, such as gastrectomy, colectomy, partial pancreatectomy, and to do indication to imaging procedures in gastrointestinal disorders that can be surgically treated. This knowledge will be implemented by a comprehensive imaging approach to the diagnosis of the main surgical syndromes.
Module: ONCOLOGIA MEDICA

Course objectives:
The course aims to provide students with the cognitive and methodological tools necessary for:
• understanding physio-pathological bases of Medical Oncology;
• understanding the biological bases and the role of anticancer drug therapies;
• recognizing and interpreting anatomical symptoms and signs, functional alterations and general symptoms;
• recognizing the phases of the neoplastic disease by prescribing cytological, histological and immuno-histochemical tests, integrating them into the diagnostic synthesis and the related prognosis definition;
• identifing the possibilities of intervention in order to promptly address the patient to the specialist;
• diagnosing and treating the main neoplastic pathologies;
• recognizing and interpret the symptoms of the terminal phase and identifing the possibilities assistance for the terminally ill patient and his/her family;
• allowing the right relationship and communication between doctors and patients.

Clinic, diagnostics and therapy of the following diseases:
pathology of the breast: inflammatory pathology, benign and malignant tumors;
thyroid pathology: multinodular goiter, carcinoma
pathology of the adrenal gland: benign and malignant tumors
acute abdomen, acute and chronic peritonitis, circumscribed and diffuse, mechanical and dynamic occlusion, mesenteric infarct;
open and closed traumas of the abdomen;
high and low digestive bleeding;
pathology of the esophagus: changes in motility (achalasia and diffuse spasm), diverticula, hernia jatale and gastro-oesophageal reflux, carcinoma of the esophagus and of the cardia;
pathology of the stomach: peptic ulcer, carcinoma, pathophysiology of demolition
partial and total gastric;
pathology of the small intestine, the colon, the rectum and the anus: Crohn's disease and ulcerative rectocolitis,
diverticular disease of the colon, perianal abscess, fistula, hemorrhoid, fissure, carcinoma of the
colon, rectum and anus;
hepatic disease: abscess, echinococcosis, portal hypertension, benign tumors, malignant tumors
primitive and secondary;
pathology of the gallbladder and biliary tract: biliary lithiasis and its complications, obstructive jaundice, neoplasms of the biliary tract;
pancreas pathology: acute and chronic pancreatitis, exocrine carcinoma, endocrine tumors;
lung disease: pneumothorax, benign and malignant tumors;
hernias and laparoceles of the abdominal wall;
vascular pathology: abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral
Module: ONCOLOGIA MEDICA

Students will be able to:
• define the features of a screening and describe the possibilities of the different cancer screenings;
• list the main warning signs and symptoms due to cancer presence;
• adopt diagnostic, laboratory and instrumental procedures where there are signs or clinical symptoms due cancer;
• identify the useful and necessary elements for the definition of the cancer stage;
• discuss treatments according to the development of a neoplasia, the stage and the prognostic factors;
• define the criteria underlying the choice of the different anticancer medical therapies;
• list the main classes of substances that can be used according to the different categories of anticancer medical therapies;
• recognize the most frequent side effects due to the anticancer medical therapy;
• detect the main complications of cancer (infections, effusions, compressions, etc.);
• identify the most characteristic signs or symptoms of oncological emergencies and indicate the chances of action;
• communicate the diagnosis to the patient and his/her family members, adapting the message according to the patient's characteristics and the related prognosis;
• recognize the patient’s and his family members possible psychological issues;
• use palliative treatments (antalgic therapy, support therapy, etc.)

Examination Methods
Oral examinations
Single registration at the end of the 2 tests (Surgery and Oncology).
The test is carried out on the whole program referred to in point 2 and not only for the program lessons.
The score is attributed to the single part of the test (marks out of thirty) the sum of the two marks obtained divided by 2 allow to reach the final mark (average of marks);
Exam methods are the same for attending and non-attending students.
