Advanced methods in physiotherapy and introduction to research (2019/2020)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning outcomes
Provide basic knowledge regarding manual therapy strategies in musculoskeletal disorders,
the methodology of sports physical therapy, the methodology of evidence-based physical therapy, inferential statistics in clinical research as well as the logic and philosophy of science in clinical research.
evidence, inferential statistics in clinical research as well as the logic and philosophy of science in
physical therapy.
Program
MODULE: ADVANCED MANUAL THERAPY STRATEGIES IN MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS.
Knowledge of the general principles and procedures for the application of specific manual therapy techniques, indications/contraindications, and differences in manual therapy approaches to musculoskeletal disorders.
indications / contraindications, the differences in the various approaches of manual therapy in order to choose with an EBP approach, the most effective method.
in order to choose with an EBP approach, the most effective method. Apply them to some cases
examples.
MODULE: METHODOLOGY OF SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY
To know the strategies of evaluation and intervention (preventive, curative, rehabilitative) in the
dysfunctions related to sports activities, with particular attention to gesture-specific dysfunctions.
Know and be able to apply the principles of emergency intervention in the field in acute situations.
MODULE: EVIDENCE-BASED PHYSICAL THERAPY METHODOLOGY
To know the principles of Evidence Based Practice, the different types of studies and research questions
(descriptive, etiology/risk, diagnostic/assessment, prognostic, treatment). Know the
concepts of systematic review, meta-analysis, and guideline. Deepen the psychometric aspects
of assessment strategies.
Know how to correctly formulate a research question, know how to construct a research string and conduct
a search using major databases in physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Know how to critically read a scientific study.
MODULE: INFERENTIAL STATISTICS IN CLINICAL RESEARCH
Know the fundamental elements of inferential statistics useful for inducing or inferring the
properties of a population based on known data about a sample. Acquire
Knowledge of experimental design, sampling, analysis and distribution of variables.
variables.
MODULE: LOGIC AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE IN PHYSICAL THERAPY.
Enable understanding of essential issues related to philosophy of science and logic,
the connections between philosophical reflection on the scientific method and the practice of science in physical therapy.
Acquire knowledge and skills in understanding a philosophical text, ability to apply
this knowledge in philosophical argumentation, autonomy of judgment in the merits of the implications
and sense of the arguments, communication skills aimed at the correct expression of philosophical content.
