Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with the basic methodological tools that are required to understand and analyze: 1. the relationships between performative arts and visual arts in the fields of iconography and stage design; 2. the mutual influences between theatre and art; 3. the presence of performative or theatrical elements in contemporary art.

Program

The course will be divided into two parts. The first one will consist mainly of a concise theoretical analysis of the different kinds of relationships between performing and visual arts. The examples will especially refer to Ancient Greece, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and XIXth century. The second part will focus on the theme of the “artificial performer” between theatre, dance and art in early XXth century, from Futurism to Bauhaus.
