The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning outcomes
The integrated course Visual communication: cinema and audiovisual media aims to provide students with theoretical and methodological tools useful for acquiring advanced skills in the following fields: film and media theory, film and television criticism. In particular, students will be capable of developing original ideas in the areas of film analysis, film theory and movie criticism on the web and print media. Finally, the main purpose of this course is to make students able to decode the flow of audiovisual narratives that marks our daily life. The course will help students hone their critical thinking skills in such a way that they can interpret and analyze the interactions between media discourses and discursive practices of the other subject areas investigated during the degree course.
Film and Media Theory (M) The main object of this course is to provide students with knowledge of historical and theoretical problems related to the film and media theory. On succesful completion of this course students will know the forms of relationship between cinema, television and the other arts of the twentieth century. They also will be able to hone their critical thinking skills in the field of film and media theory.
Methodology of Film and Television Criticism (M)
The course aims to provide students with thorough knowledge of the history of italian film criticism and its socio-cultural role, with particular attention for the second post-war period. On succesful completion of this course, students will have acquired the tools and techniques to write movie and television reviews: they also will be able to put analyses into clear argumentative writing.
Program
The course aims to offer students theoretical, methodological and practical tools to analyze the different forms of film criticism. In a first module the main methodological models of film criticism will be dealt with, in particular by deepening the activity of Italian and foreign critics. The second part will focus on the different forms of critical activity in Italy, from the origins to the present day: individual critical case studies related to films whose titles will be communicated at the beginning of the course will be taken into consideration. There will also be thematic in-depth meetings animated by professionals and scholars in the field.
