Phenomenology and ontology of care (2021/2022)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning outcomes
The course of “Phenomenology and Ontology of Care” aims at providing advanced knowledge of theoretical philosophy, with particular attentions to the phenomenological discussion and ontology issues. The theme of care is assumed here as a key-category of contemporary age thanks to which it is possible to analyze and to problematize the understanding of what is existing.
Both modules will offer those conceptual, methodological and cultural elements capable of developing and increasing critical and argumentative skills as well as adequate linguistic competence in the matter. At the end of the course the student will have become familiar with the main advanced notions of theoretical philosophy and will be able to reflect on their mutual relations. In addition, the student is expected to have adequate knowledge of the texts, independent judgment and ability to master philosophical terminology. The course also aims to transmit the ability to critically establish connections between knowledge, even in an interdisciplinary form. These skills will allow the student to communicate, share and disseminate information, ideas, problems and solutions connected with the field of care, both with specialists and with non-specialists. Furthermore, also in view of the preparation of their degree thesis, the student will be encouraged to develop autonomously research paths.
Program
Theory of affective experience (Module I)
This year's programme will focus on the theory of affective experience relating to the boundary between philosophical anthropology and psychopathology in three steps.
Firstly, the function of feeling and the affective sphere in the anthropogenetic process of human formation will be analysed.
Secondly, we will analyse how the disturbances of feeling and the affective sphere on a psychopathological level reflect on this anthropogenetic process, comparing with some issues that emerged in the debate on the psychopathology of emotions.
Thirdly, the concept of philosophical anthropology will be explored by referring to the 1927 lecture by Max Scheler, who inaugurated the Philosophical Anthropology of the Twentieth Century, and focusing on the transition from anthropocentrism to "deep anthropology", i.e. anthropology reinterpreted in the sense of deep ecology.
The lectures will mainly examine the following texts: "Biosemiotics", "The Position of Man in the Cosmos" and "Incipient Schizophrenia", thus it is recommended that students choose from these texts for the exam.
Examination texts. Two texts should be selected from the following:
L. Binswanger, Il caso Ellen West, Einaudi 2011
K. Conrad, La schizofrenia incipiente. Un saggio di analisi gestaltica del delirio, Giovanni Fioriti Editore 2013.
G. Cusinato, Biosemiotica e psicopatologia dell'ordo amoris, FrancoAngeli 2018
E. Minkowski, Il tempo vissuto, Einaudi 2004.
M. A. Sechehaye, Diario di una schizofrenica, Giunti editore 2006
M. Scheler, La posizione dell'uomo nel cosmo, FrancoAngeli, Milano 2013
G. Stanghellini, L'amore che cura, Feltrinelli, 2018
The recorded lectures are an integral part of the examination.
Students are invited to contact the lecturer to discuss any doubts, queries or questions concerning their preparation for the examination.

Ontologia del rapporto (Modulo II)
The city, the philosophy
Philosophy is linked from its beginnings to the city form. That is, it presents itself as an urban life-form. Central is the connection between thought, forms of life and spatiality. The question that this year's course intends to ask starting from Walter Benjamin's reflection is, further on, whether this urban space is itself a form of thought. With respect to the way in which this space has been constituting itself, for example in the history of Paris in its classical way, a further central question of the course will focus on which forms of thought can be connected to a radical decomposition and recomposition of space as occurs in outskirts of the world, in slums, in makeshift housing or, more generally, on the edge of the city known by most of its inhabitants.
The lessons will focus on a critical examination that will proceed from the bibliography of texts in the form of comments, re-elaboration, extension and discussion of the texts examined. Individual study of the texts in the bibliography will be an integral part of the lectures. An individual reception service is provided at the times indicated on the teacher's web page. Any changes to the calendar of lessons and reception will be communicated on the web page of each teacher. There will be recordings of the lessons and streaming.
Any additional teaching material will be reported by the end of the course and, where possible, made available on the online teaching platform.
Students not attending the classroom can contact the teacher to discuss doubts and questions concerning their preparation for the exam upon receipt.
Bibliography
Examination Methods
------------------------
MM: TEORIE DELL'ESPERIENZA AFFETTIVA
------------------------
The exam will assess whether students possess 1) deep knowledge of the main specific issues dealt with during the course and 2) the capacity to give an independent reflection on theoretical implications of those issues, using a language pertinent and appropriate to them.
There will be an oral examination. The examination is based on the recorded lectures and two texts of the student’s choice. The student can also take the examination by discussing a written paper as a writing exercise, especially if there is a specific interest or motivation. The topic of the paper must be agreed upon in advance with the lecturer during his office hours. The paper (about 20,000 characters long) must be delivered by e-mail seven days before the examination date. The file, in Word format, should be titled with the student’s SURNAME, NAME, TITLE OF THE COURSE. The paper should be thought of as a logically ordered list of the passages from the reference texts which impressed mostly or aroused interest. The own comments and the quotations should not be confused, so the latter should be placed in quotation marks along with the page numbers. The final part of the paper should be devoted to a short chapter on “Personal Reflection” (a couple of pages) in which the student can refer to her/his own experience or other texts.

MM: ONTOLOGIA DEL RAPPORTO
------------------------
In order to pass the exam, students will show that: - they possess a deep knowledge of the main specific issues developed during the course; - they possess also the capacity to make an independent reflection on ethical implications of such issues, using a pertinent and appropriate language. The competence of all students, either those who attended the course or those who didn’t, will be valued through an oral examination about the specific topics and questions discussed during the classes. The final score will be expressed in /30s.
