Learning objectives

The course is aimed at illustrating the development and diversification of the English language in its varieties. It is also aimed at shedding light on the factors that have determined the emergence of Englishes in their plurality and at providing insights into linguistic, cultural and ideological issues related to the diverse contexts and uses of Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in the world. The latter will also be analyzed in its use in professional contexts. Language competence in English to be acquired: C2 level - Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Requirements to be able to follow the course.
A C2 level of English is required to be able to follow this course.
Pre-requisite for the final exam:
A C2 level language certificate (Common European Framework of Reference) should be obtained through CLA or through external institutions and validated by the CLA.

Program

During the course we will cover and discuss aspects related to the historical evolution of the English language, its spread and its geographical diversification.The focus will be placed on phenomena of linguistic and cultural context and on processes of language change in the different contexts of use of the English language, including its role as a global language, also within the professional context.

Part One:
Key concepts in the study of English(es)
Models for understanding the spread of English
Language contact phenomena: hybridity in World Englishes, English-based pidgins and creoles
Part Two:
English in different areas of the world
English as a global language: English as a Lingua Franca and English as Business Lingua Franca.
Implications of the pluralism of Varieties of English for learning and teaching the language.

Didactic methods

Teaching Methodology
The course will consist of a blended learning approach which combines face to dace classroom lectures with classroom discussion and the use of digital tools; the students are encouraged to participate actively in the discussions.
Students who cannot come to class are invited to access the Moodle platform with their university passwords. They will find all the course content and activities available on the Moodle.
Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. Students are also invited to contact the instructor via e-mail or during office hours.

Learning assessment procedures

Pre-requisite: C2 level language certificate (Common European Framework of Reference), obtained through CLA or through external institutions and validated by the CLA
Type of exam: Oral exam in English. The questions will be on the theoretical issues and examples of English varieties covered in the course.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Students should demonstrate metalinguistic awareness, analytical skills and critical thinking.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The average mark between the language certification (CLA) and the two parts of this exam.
