Learning objectives

The teaching goals of the course will address the definition of materilas compatible with biological tissues, their characteistics and the test to validate the compatibility.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Fundamentals of engineering properties of materials (Materials Science, Knowledge of solid mechanics, concepts of elastic stress/deformation constants in tension, bending, compression, shear, rheological behavior).

Program

The first part will cover the fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomaterials and biomedical technologies. The progression and completion of the taught components will parallel the discussion of biomedical products and their applications in preclinical contexts. Case studies will be discussed, with the aim of addressing specific requirements that students will need to implement in their assigned project. With the knowledge acquired, students will be able to formulate comprehensive answers to the research questions that emerge from the course content. Specifically, the following topics will be covered: • Overview of biomaterials • Properties of biomaterials • Bulk properties • Surface properties and surface characterization • Role of water in biomaterials • Classes of materials used in medicine • Processing of materials • Foreign body responses to biomaterials and their evaluation • Safety and risk considerations in the development of medical devices • Sterilization and Disinfection of Biomaterials for Medical Devices • Commercial considerations in the development of medical devices • Medical device failure: recovery, evaluation and analysis of implant failure
