Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding 1. The course aims to provide theoretical and methodological basis for social businesses management, with particular reference to educative, social, and community health services. 2. In details, at the end of the course, the student will have acquired knowledge about characteristics of third sector and of principal managerial issues of social businesses, accounting and social accountability tools suitable for social businesses, and social impact assessment. Applying knowledge and understanding 1. With regards to skills, the student will be able to apply planning and accounting tools to social businesses, to write social accountability reports. 2. Also and the student will be able to apply to adopt social impact assessment models. 3. Finally, the student will be able to increase its knowledge about civil economy and the basis of business ethics.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The course is aimed at introducing students to fundamental notions of Business Economics applied to the third sector and social enterprises; therefore, it requires no prerequisites.

Didactic methods

The course adopts different didactical methods and it is supported by Moodle platform. Both attending and non-attending students can subscribe to Moodle platform to participate in proposed activities.
Together with traditional lessons, the course adopts didactical strategies such as shared lessons, cooperative learning, case study and company visit, film, and other active dynamics aimed to allow the development of practical competencies and critical skills beyond knowledge.

Learning assessment procedures

The evaluation adopts a blended approach. During the lessons, two activities aimed at formative evaluation are proposed to students and a summative evaluation examination is administrated ad the end of the lesson time.
The activities aimed at formative evaluation (even though they are related to classroom dynamics) are available on Moodle platform, also to non-attending students. They do not imply a punctual evaluation but only formative feedback from the teacher. The results of these activities give rise to the construction of an evaluation portfolio that is discussed during the final examination and that corresponds to half of the total evaluation.
As an alternative, the student can choose to be evaluated without preparing an evaluative portfolio. In this case, the exam will be oral and it will focus on the entire program.

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation criteria are the following:
- depth and range of knowledge (does the student know the arguments of the program?)
- capacity of applying knowledge to specific managerial issues (is the student able to discuss the ethical dimension of managerial issues?)
- written and oral language skills (does the student express her/himself in a correct way?)
- completeness of learning path (Is the student able to discuss the different topics of the course? And link them to each other?)

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The summative evaluation derives from an oral examination during which the student discusses him/her formative path (included in the evaluation portfolio that will be evaluated as half of the total evaluation as a maximum).
