Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding 1. To know and understand the characteristics of research in ECEC and the current state of the debate on empirical research in education. 2. To identify the potential and limits of the main methods used for the study of educational processes in early childhood. 3. To recognize and address issues related to the validity of qualitative research in an educational context. Applying knowledge and understanding 1. To read a research report on childcare services, identifying its structure, underlying logic and potential for implementation of the results. 2. To Identify research areas and build appropriate research questions 3. To elaborate a research design within an early childhood education service.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Direct knowledge of ECEC services, preferably experienced during the stage period.

Program

The course deepens the following contents:
- Qualitative research and its epistemological frameworks.
- The research design, its components, and the construction of a research process.
- The main qualitative approaches and research methods in education, their potential and limits.
- Early Childhood Education and Care settings as research fields: specificities
- The interaction between research, documentation and educational practice in ECEC settings
The programme will include a handbook on qualitative research in educational settings and a book on mosaic approach.

Didactic methods

Lectures;
Case analyses from research tools and reports;
Exercises on the construction of a research design and the design of fieldwork;
Analysis and discussion from raw data;

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of a 1-hour long written test in Italian with multiple-choice and open questions. The maximum score for each question is indicated on the test sheet.
The questions are constructed to assess: knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts and ideas of the authors covered; the ability to reason from a research perspective and to make one's own reasoning explicit; the ability to analyse research tools and investigation reports.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The examination assesses: the correctness of statements in relation to what has been studied in the course; the use of scientifically appropriate language; the ability to design research paths; the ability to analyse materials and research products; the ability to rationally justify one's methodological choices and to subject one's reasoning to criticism.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

In the test, multiple choice questions give a maximum score of 18, open questions 13 points.
