Learning objectives

The course aims at providing students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce with an adequate knowledge of the Spanish culture of different periods, focusing on its literary, historical, geographical and anthropological aspects. At the end of the course, students will acquire a sound knowledge of the issues covered by the module (historical and cultural context, main writers/texts/movements/genres of the period examined). With regard to the applied and communication skills, students will be able to critically comment the primary texts listed in the syllabus, in relation both to their historical and cultural context and literary specificities, as well as to express the acquired knowlegde in a clear and consistent way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

None, but it is required a A2/B1 level in Spanish in order to attend the lessons profitably. Erasmus students should have a degree of competence in Italian corresponding to B1 level of CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Program

The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of 20th-century Spanish history and literature. It will delve into the historical context leading up to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), including the rise of Franco, the establishment and consolidation of the Francoist dictatorship in the postwar period, and its eventual decline (1939-1975). From a literary perspective, the course will focus on authors and literary movements that emerged during this era, emphasizing texts that provoke reflection on the historical moment and the social changes underway. Specifically, the course aims to refine students' textual analysis skills when engaging with narrative and theatrical texts. It will also explore the adaptation of selected texts to different media, drawing intertextual and/or intermedial comparisons (from novel to theater, novel to film, novel to TV series, theater to film).
REQUIRED READINGS (in their entirety, in Spanish).
Camilo José Cela, La familia de Pascual Duarte.
Miguel Delibes, Cinco horas con Mario.
Federico García Lorca, La casa de Bernarda Alba.
Carmen Martín Gaite, Entre visillos.
The study of the texts will be accompanied by comparisons with their respective film, television, or theatrical adaptations, which will be indicated during the course.
The syllabus is also valid for non-attending students, who are encouraged to contact the professor via email.

The oral exam aims to verify and assess the breadth and depth of the acquired knowledge, analytical skills (contextualization and critical commentary on the works in the syllabus), the ability to connect the various topics covered in the course, language proficiency, and the clarity and coherence of the candidate's exposition and argumentation. Taking the oral exam in Spanish will be considered a merit in the overall evaluation.
