Learning objectives
This course introduces to some voices and aspects of modern and contemporary French literature in order to develop critical readings of relevant literary texts in relation to social, economic and artistic changes in the recent history of French culture. At the end of this course, students shall therefore acquire knowledge in French cultural history, along with the ability of applying such knowledge to critical readings of relevant literary texts concerning the identitarian, relational, historical, cultural, social and economical issues the course deals with.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Both recommended, obtaining the language certification and passing the French Language 1 exam are not mandatory requirements to access the exam.
Program
The course will provide a theoretical-critical framework of the particularly complex relationship between literature and epidemics, focusing initially on some traités de peste published in France at the end of the 16th century (Jean Cassal; Ambroise Paré) and, subsequently, on two authors representative of the corpus of Littérature du sida (Guy Hocquenghem; René de Ceccatty). The imaginary and prejudices that emerge following epidemics such as the plague in the 16th century and AIDS in the 20th century will be investigated, as well as the profound social, political and literary repercussions. The focus of study will be some Renaissance treatises on littérature médicale and two contemporary novels, whose vocabulary, literary strategies and main themes will be analyzed. Particular attention will be paid to the historical context and to a series of topoi, including disease as divine punishment, the impuissance of the medical community, writing as an instrument of salvation, which characterize the texts examined and which put the authors-witnesses of the epidemic into direct dialogue throughout the centuries. A detailed program, with a list of literary texts and other study materials, as well as specific indications for preparing for the exam, will be provided at the beginning and during the course. The evaluation will take place through an oral assessment of the knowledge relating to the Course.
Evaluation criteria
The following will be assessed: the quality of the oral expression in French, the clarity and coherence of the argumentation, the completeness of the information and the ability to critically deepen the knowledge acquired.
