Learning objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental knowledge of the financial system and its functions, particularly focusing on the role of banks in supporting the real economy.
As a first goal, the course will provide insights on the main theories, models and research fields into the domain of financial institutions and corporate finance. Specific attention will be given to the hot topics in finance.
As a second goal, students will be provided critical skills to address original and novel research questions in finance along with a knowledge of the most cutting-edge methodologies for doing research in finance.

Didactic methods

This course is designed to develop the first academic skills to conducting high-quality research into the financial domain. Students will get the basic skill to identify the most intriguing and promising research fields in finance, to develop research hypothesis, conduct analysis and present results in a rigorous way.
While following a theoretical approach, classes will place specific attention to stimulating discussions as occasions to develop a critical thinking regarding functions and roles of finance.

3. Assignment, Research Paper & Presentation (50%)
