Deadlines and Administrative Requirements

Final Examination
The final examination for the achievement of the Master’s Degree in Data Science consists of the writing and discussion of a written thesis in English, accompanied by a summary in Italian.

The thesis may concern:

  • the in-depth study of a scientific topic covered during the course of study;
  • the analysis and solution of a case study, theoretical and/or derived from industrial issues;
  • an experimental activity, possibly carried out:
    • as part of an internship at research institutions, schools, laboratories, or companies, in Italy or abroad;
    • during study periods abroad;
    • as the result of an independent and original research project, possibly including components of:
      • mathematical formalization,
      • computer science design,
      • business-oriented development.

The activities related to the final examination are carried out under the supervision of a supervisor affiliated with:

  • a university structure or also external to the University of Verona;
  • or, upon approval, with a recognized external institution, in Italy or abroad,
    in accordance with the regulations of the Master’s Degree program.

The final exam is worth 21 ECTS for students enrolled in the academic year 25/26 and subsequent years. 22 ECTS for those enrolled in previous years.


Evaluation
The evaluation of the thesis takes place in two phases:

Thesis Evaluation Committee
Composed of three faculty members, possibly including the supervisor, and appointed by the President of the Teaching Committee.
Its tasks are to:

  • examine the submitted materials;
  • formulate an evaluation of the work carried out;
  • forward this evaluation to the Final Examination Committee.

Final Examination Committee
Appointed by the President of the Teaching Committee, it is composed of:

  • a Chairperson;
  • at least four members selected from the University’s faculty.

The Committee is responsible for expressing an overall evaluation, taking into account:

  • the student’s entire academic career;
  • the consistency between educational and professional objectives;
  • the ability to work independently;
  • critical thinking;
  • communication skills;
  • overall cultural maturity;
  • the topics addressed in the thesis.

Requirements and Regulations
Students may access the final examination only after:

  • completing all educational requirements set out in the study plan;
  • fulfilling administrative obligations within the deadlines established in the graduation calendar.

The functioning of the committees and the criteria for awarding the final grade are governed by specific regulations approved by the Teaching Committee.
