Learning outcomes

The Introductory Romance Philology course aims to provide students with a philological-linguistic and literary knowledge of Romance languages and literatures of the Middle Ages, in their passage from Latin to vernacular and to reflect upon the tradition of common civilization – variously structured but unitary in its origins and meaning – which is represented by the Latin-Romance cultural world

Program

Prerequisites for the Introductory Course:
Students are required to have attended a Latin course. The Introductory course must always precede the Advanced course. Prior knowledge of a modern romance foreign language (French, Spanish) facilitates the preparation for the course syllabus.

Content of the Introductory Course:
The Introductory Course will deal with the origin of the Romance languages and their transformation from Latin. The course will examine some texts in vernacular, as well as the history of the medieval Romance literatures, through the philological-linguistic comments of some important literary texts. The first part of the course will deal with the influence of the french culture in Italy in the 2nd and 3rd centuries through the analysis of texts and iconographic documents.

Title: a) Introduction to the Romance Philology. b) Iconographic documents on the influence of the french culture in Italy on the 2nd and 3rd centuries

Educational Method:
The lectures will have a theoretical part and a practical part of philological-linguistic analysis of single texts from different medieval literary genres

Examination Methods
