Learning outcomes
The course aims at letting the students acquire the aptitude to comment and to reflect critically on the treated texts. The problem of the constitution of the personal identity will be examined as hermeneutical process of the self, as "giving form" to the soul (Socratic maieutics), and as Bildung and birth to the new life of the individual.
Program
Prerequisites: To be conversant with the history of philosophy and with the philosophical terminology. Ability to give expressive forms to interior reflection.
Course content:
Experience and Person. The constitution and transformation of the Self through practices of interpretation, of taking care of self, of existential rectification and functionalization, which enlarge the not predetermined possibilities of experience.
Texts for the exam:
- John McDowell, Mente e mondo, Torino, Einaudi, 1999.
- Max Scheler, Formare l'uomo, Milano, Franco Angeli, 2009.
- Reader composed of the texts (of M. Scheler, Ch. Taylor, D. Davidson, P. Ricœur, P. Hadot, and others) treated during the course. It will be available after the beginning of the course.
Didactic method: Lectures and occasional discussions.
Examination Methods
Oral examination. Possibility to structure oral examinations with a written text on subjects agreed upon with the teacher (only for students attending lessons).
