Learning outcomes

Il corso intende fornire agli studenti un esauriente quadro della tradizione letteraria italiana (testi, contesti, metodi, temi, problemi, forme e contenuti) dalle origini all’Unità (parte introduttiva) e approfondirne la conoscenza con particolare riferimento a una precisa fase del suo sviluppo storico, attraverso l’analisi diretta dell’opera di un autore particolarmente rappresentativo di quello specifico periodo e clima culturale (parte progredita).

• PARTE INTRODUTTIVA: the main phases and authors of the italian literary tradition from the Origini to the Unità, with analysis of exemplary texts
• PARTE PROGREDITA: Letters and books of letters from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century.

Anthology of texts by the major authors of our literary tradition. The anthology will be placed on the University e-learning platform. The texts to be analyzed will be indicated by the teacher during the course.
Non-attending students must present a written and detailed list of the selected pieces, under penalty of exclusion from the exam.

Examination Methods

The assessment of the preparation will take place by oral examination, intended to verify above all the direct knowledge and the ability to analyze the texts. It is scheduled an in itinere test for attending students that will focus on the first part of the course. With regard to this first part, the student will be required to know the main lines of Italian literary history from its origins to the nineteenth century. The student will have to study with particular attention the authors and texts presented in the anthology. The first part of the exam (substituted by the in itinere test for attending students) is oral; the first question will concern the biography of an author, the second will ask to illustrate the texts chosen by the student.

The program of the first part of the exam is the same for both attending students and non-attending students.

The second part of the exam is oral and will verify the level of learning of the second part of the course. The student who brings the program for attending students will have to know in the biographies of Francesco Petrarca, Pietro Aretino and Ugo Foscolo and will have to be able to introduce, paraphrase and comment autonomously the theses presented in class.

Non-attending students will take part in the following texts for the latter:
Paul Larivaille, Pietro Aretino, Rome, Salerno, 1997; F. Forner, Scrivere lettere nel XVIII secolo, Verona 2012; an annotated edition of Jacopo Ortis's Last Letters.

Students may decide to support the two parts of the exam in the same appeal, or in two separate appeals.
