Learning outcomes

Around 1968, the year of student protests, a number of literary works emerged in Germany which deal with the relationship between politics and literature in many different ways. These include the novels of Heinrich Böll, the poems of Erich Fried and the documentary dramas by Peter Weiss, as well as the linguistic experiments by Peter Handke and political songs. Starting with these texts as a basis, the course will give an introduction to the most important topics of German post-war literature: the rebellion against the authority of the older generation and against the attempt to forget the horrors of the War, the pacifist movement, the fight for sexual liberation and a university which would be open for everybody, the enthusiasm for rock music and drugs.
