Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is providing students with the basic theoretical notions of pragmatics and discourse analysis as well as the practical tools to analyze written and spoken texts from a pragmatics perspective. In addition, the course will illustrate the role and use of English as a language of international communication in the workplace.
Program
The aim of this course is providing students with the basic theoretical notions of pragmatics and discourse analysis as well as the practical tools to analyze written and spoken texts from a pragmatics perspective. In addition, the course will illustrate the role and use of English as a language of international communication in the workplace.
The course will focus on the linguistic analysis of spoken and written texts. The main concepts of pragmatics and discourse analysis will be illustrated. A brief overview will be given on the pragmatic implications of the use of English as a language of global communication in the workplace in written and oral contexts.
The main topics covered will be:
- Definition of pragmatics and discourse analysis
- Text, context, and co-text
- Cohesion and coherence
- Inferences: entailments, presuppositions, implicatures
- Speech acts
- Cooperation principle and conversational maxims
- Conversation analysis
- Positive and negative Face
English as a global language and BELF
- English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and English as Business Lingua Franca (ELF)
- Negotiation of meaning in BELF communication
- Expressing the local language/culture in BELF communication
The course will be delivered through lectures; active involvement of the students is encouraged.

Examination Methods
Pre-requisites: In order to access the exam, students need to have passed the computer test of the C1 level, English Language 1 and English Literature 1.
The final exam will be a written aiming to assess the student's acquisition of the contents of the course and the ability to analyze brief conversational exchanges / written passages.
