L-OR/21 - CHINESE AND SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Learning outcomes

The objective of this course is twofold 1) to provide students with a broad overview of social phenomena and transformations in contemporary China; 2) to enable students to analyze social issues of relevance in China and beyond, and to develop their linguistic competence (and relevant lexicon in Mandarin Chinese) on selected topics. By the end of this course students will have a general understanding of the complexity of Chinese society, while collateral activities and students' in class presentations will enable them to acquire basic notions, contents and linguistic knowledge on a range of major topics.

Program

This course introduces emerging tendencies in contemporary Chinese society, with a specific focus on how recent developments draw upon the Chinese traditional system of values and thought, as well as the historical events of the modern Chinese history (post Opium wars), the Maoist period and the post-Mao reforms (1978-present). Particular focus will be paid to the following topics: tradition and modernity, role of institutions in the society, family, social media, national identity in global contexts, globalization and Chinese consumers, environmental issues.

Examination Methods

The following criteria are evaluated:
- Attendance and Class Participation (10%)
- Written test (mid term)
- students' presentation on a selected topic (please refer to instruction provided during the course)
- short paper
