Learning objectives

The course aims to present the diachronic development of Chinese literature from its origins to the eighteenth century, through the description of the historical-cultural system and the analysis of genres, authors and major works. At the end of the course, students will have a thorough knowledge of the topics covered during lessons and of the relevant critical discourses, and will be able to describe independently and with critical competence the ancient and premodern literary history.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites for attending classes.
To take the exam, you must have passed Chinese Language 1 and Chinese Literature and Culture 1.

Program

The course presents the general outlines of the development of ancient and pre-modern Chinese culture from a historical, literary, philosophical and religious perspective. It is divided into units defined on the basis of specific historical and cultural characteristics: 1) Neolithic origins and the Shang and Zhou dynasties; 2) The foundation of the Empire: the Qin and Han dynasties; 3) The Chinese Middle Ages and the influence of Buddhism; 4) The Tang dynasty; 5) The Song-Yuan dynasties; 6) The late imperial period: the Ming and Qing dynasties. Within the individual units, the course offers thematic and historical insights into literary genres, main works and authors. Part of the course will be devoted to the presentation of the narrative production of the pre-modern period.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination consists of an oral interview.

Evaluation criteria

The examination aims at determining the acquisition of the historical-literary knowledge required, the analysis of the readings in the syllabus and the ability to argue and analyse critically on the basis of the skills acquired during the course.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Grades are measured in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
