Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should possess a thorough knowledge of the most influential authors and of the main works, genres, and trends, as well as of the historical and cultural context of China’s literary history between the mid-Eighteenth Century and the contemporary era. At the end of the course the students will be able to describe autonomously and with enough critical competence the cultural and literary history of modern China.

Program

This course provides a survey of Chinese literature from the nineteenth century to the contemporary age from the point of view of historical context, themes, genres and texts. The literary-historical outline will pay particular attention to the analysis of some key issues for the understanding of modern and contemporary China, such as the origins of modernity, the relationship between modernity and tradition, the role of the intellectual and the relationship between art, politics and society. The presentation of the historical outline will be accompanied by the reading and analysis of literary and critical sources in translation.
