Introduction to English Linguistics: Focus on Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology


The course provides an introduction to the study of English Linguistics with special reference to phonetics, phonology and morphology.

Program

1. HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF ENGLISH WORDS

2. PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY
- The International Phonetic Alphabet
- speech organs
- vowels and consonants
- voicing
- place of articulation
- manner of articulation
- intonation and prosody

3. MORPHOLOGY
- functional and lexical words
- morphemes
- affixes
- word formation processes:
- inflection
- derivation
- compounding

Additional bibliographic references especially for non-attending students will be indicated before the beginning of the course. Class presentations will be made available on-line during the course.

Examination Methods

Written exam with questions and exercises.

Students may sit for the exam, starting from the first summer session (June-July). The final mark is comprehensive of the CLA Certification and will be registered after completing the various parts of the exam.

Prerequisites: English B2 level.
