Learning outcomes

The course proposes to introduce to the study of the Social Service as a discipline and as a profession, exploring the knowledge of the disciplinary field of the Social Service. It will be illustrated the historical-philosophical presuppositions, the object of study and intervention, the values’ context of and theoretical orientations that constitute the bases on which the methodological and scientific structure of the Social Service is found. Particular attention will be set to the conditions in which the Italian Social Service has developed its knowledge, in the essential relationship among construction of routine and theoretical elaboration.

Program

The answers to the social needs: analysis of the different views of the needs in different social-historical-cultural contexts of affiliation. Definition, classification, survey of the needs and their transformation in needings.
Birth of the Social Service as demand of professionalization of the interventions answering to the social needs: from the philanthropic movements in the Anglo-Saxon countries to the foundation of the first schools of Social Service in Italy. The historical phases of Social Service’s development in Italy: its evolution from the birth to the nowadays situation.
The system of values and operational principles of the Social Service.
The subject and the intervention sphere of the Social Service.
General objectives and the role of the social worker.
Relationship among profession’s values of the and purposes and values of the services’ organized system .

Examination Methods

The examination is set by an oral test on the whole program, preceded by a written test preparatory for to the access of the examination.
The written test is of two parts: the first part concerns the historical evolution of the Social Service related to the social-political-cultural changes of our Country. The second part concerns the rest of the program.
For the oral test the student has to talk about one among the articles / passages of a text, choosed in the bibliography
