Learning outcomes

We will offer an introduction to some key concepts of our moral life - subject, intersubjectivity, language - trying to show that they belong to the tradition of western metaphysics and that they inherit the contemporary crisis of that tradition.

Program

Language and the ages of life

Philosophy has always affirmed that man is "zoon logon echon", animal which has, which possesses, language. We will explore the sense and the limits of this definition by meditating on the adventures of that "possession", i.e. by meditating on three peculiar moments of our life in which we feel all the weakness and the uncertainty of that possession. Infancy, when words belongs to others, and to speak means to be spoken by them. The age of reason, when our confidence in language simply masks the perfect efficiency of am anonymous language machinery. And extreme agedness, when our relation with language often becomes intermittent, at the limits of silence. Jean-Paul Sartre will be our guide to the "phenomenology" of these three times of our existence.
