Program

We propose a path in modern philosophy centered on the notions of otherness and difference. The currents of modern rationalism will be focused on as responses to the challenges posed by the multiplicity of historical and cultural experiences that advanced with the geographical discoveries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is possible that the attempt to arrive at a rational synthesis capable of accounting for the multiple structures of reality without eliminating and reabsorbing them has failed, but even those developments cannot be understood outside the permanent dialogue between authors sensitive to the variety of the empirical world. and those who have looked for a rule to justify it and account for it. The course will start from Michel de Montaigne's Essays (1580) who are at the basis of the seventeenth-century debate on savages and barbarism. We will then deal with the attempt at a methodological synthesis of knowledge delivered by René Descartes to the Discourse on the method (1637), to account for the multiplicity commensurate with a valid rationality criterion because it is based on methodical doubt and freed from historical-cultural habits and conditioning. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's path will be taken into consideration by insisting on the re-evaluation of sentiment as a dimension of experience that cannot be reduced to the form of reason postulated by Descartes, with reference to passages from the Confessions (1782). Passages or single parts of the cited works will be studied, bringing out the fundamental themes from the concreteness of the texts, avoiding manual abstractions and returning to the historical experiences from which the ideas are born and on which, once elaborated and put into circulation, they return to act.

Didactic methods

The course will be held in compliance with the University provisions on COVID-19.
