Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the study of medieval Latin literature with particular attention to a specific literary genre, by directly analyzing the work of one or more authors particularly representative of that specific genre. Lessons will focus on the linguistic and stylistic analysis, as well on readings of the chosen texts, also considering philological aspects and using the usual tools of literary hermeneutics (metrical analysis, study of the figures of style, as well as narratology and history of the interpretation), with the aid of methodological approaches aimed at developing adequate analytical and argumentative skills.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of classical Latin.
Program
The course aims to present, in the context of Latin poetry of the Romano-Barbaric age, the poetic production of Venantius Fortunatus (6th century), a Latin poet in Merovingian Gaul.
Bibliography and other learning resources:
The texts analyzed will be provided, in critical editions, during the lessons. The notes from the lectures will be integrated with the reading of the essays contained in the volume «Musa medievale. Saggi su temi della poesia di Venanzio Fortunato», a cura di Donatella Manzoli, Viella (I libri di Viella 223), Roma, 2016.

Evaluation criteria
The exam consists of an oral test aiming to verify the level of achievement of the learning objectives previously indicated, with special regard to:
• read, understand and translate medieval Latin texts;
• the knowledge of the essential features of medieval Latin literature;
• the ability to understand the cultural, historical and literary context of the chosen texts;
• argument skills, wealth and appropriateness of vocabulary.
