Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the tools for a critical analysis of the dramatic text and of its specific features, in the light of its performative destination.
The course of this year, aims in particular at giving the students the historical and critical tools to understand and analyse the specificity of theatre short forms of the XXth century and of the beginning of our century, comparing them both with short forms in other artistic fields and with plays of conventional length.

Program

The course will analyse theatre short forms in XXth and XXIth century, in order to point out their textual and performative features.
Part 1. Historical and theoretical framework: a) the historical premises of theatre short forms before XXth century; b) the practice of short theatre in the context of the aesthetics of brevity in XXth century; c) the comparison of short theatre with conventional length theatre in order to point out their substantial, and not merely quantitative, difference.
Part 2. Case studies: a) the futurist synthetic theatre; b) Campanile's "tragedies in two cues";c) Tardieu's "flash plays"; d) Beckett's "dramaticules".
