Hermeneutics and Linguistic Practices The programme aims to encourage hermeneutic readings of philosophical texts by having students work directly on this technique during lessons. Therefore students will be required to express their own thoughts as well as listen to others' interpretations in the group activities directed by the course teacher. For this purpose, the course aims to offer the cognitive foundations of hermeneutical practice both in its historico-philosophical reconstruction and in the contemporary debate, emphasizing the different philosophical positions on the field. The purpose of the hermeneutical practice in the classroom is that students (females and males) can acquire an ability to interpret the philosophical text proposed in the seminar with a refined critical sense and with the ability to deal with different interpretations of the text itself. All this is done to create the habit of reading philosophical texts, which may subsequently be an acquired education for further situations in which interpretative skills are needed. It is particularly important that argumentative ability is acquired both in the oral form, here privileged, but also in the written form, for which short texts are required in the context of classroom work.

Program

The course is organised as follows:

. A general overview of the hermeneutic tradition within the history of philosophy.

. Lectures on two texts by Luce Irigaray, which are here proposed as collective hermeneutic reading, in order to frame Irigaray's philosophical thought and reconstruct the theoretical context in whic her work is situated.

. Reading and hermeneutical analysis of Luce Irigaray, "Speculum. L'altra donna", Feltrinelli, 2017.

. The second text that will be studied is Luce Irigaray's, "Questo sesso che non è un sesso", Feltrinelli, 1990. This text is out of print, but can be found on the internet and can be bought online. If there are any difficulties in acquiring this text, please contact the professor, who can provide it.

Examination Methods

The evaluation will take the form of an oral exam, the varies greatly according to wheter the student has attended the class or not.
For those who attended the class: the cours aims to encourage a hermeneutic analysis of philosophical texts, trough practicing in the class directly with the students. The evaluation therefore occurs during the course, and will be based upon presentations of parts of the texts, on spoken contributions made in class, and on two written papers will be presebted halway through the course and at the end respectively.
For those who do not attend, the evaluation is based on a traditional oral examen, in which the professor will evaluate the student's capacity to interpret the text and their argumentative reasoning based on excerpts that will be provided during the examination. We remind those who do not attend that it is necessary to inform the professor during tutorials, in order to decide together how best to qpproach the texts. Pleas consider that the second text by Irigaray "Questo sesso che non è un sesso", can be approached as an introduction to "Speculum". I therefore should be studied first.
