Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to make students aware of the fundamental concepts of the sociology of mass communications and the sociological reflection on the main mass-medium.
Program
In the first part of the course the main theories concerning communication and in particular mass communication will be studied and analyzed. The theme linked to public opinion, its historical development and its most recent changes will be examined in depth, as well as the main sectors of journalistic activity and the various media, from the press to the web, highlighting the problems related to management and to journalistic marketing, without neglecting the crucial question of the ethics and responsibility of the journalist. In the second part, further questions will be addressed concerning: information in crisis and emergency contexts, the role of emotional journalism in the mediated representation of suffering and cruelty, the media coverage of migrants and politics in Europe.
