Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the issues and methods concerning the study of the relationship between music and media, focusing especially on the technologies used to fix, transmit, read and listen to music in the western world from the Middle Ages to the present. On successful completion of the module, students will have acquired extensive knowledge of the material and technological features of music media; they will have also developed the skills necessary for analyzing the cultural, social and ideological aspects of music media.

Program
The Sanremo Festival: the song and the media.
The course is divided into three parts. The first focuses on music as a means of communication between people and the construction of the identity of social groups, on the media (on their social, cultural and ideological aspects), and on the technologies used to transmit and enjoy music in the western world in order to provide knowledge and analytical tools of the different types of editorial/media products that employ music.
The second part focuses on the Sanremo Festival, investigated not so much as a container of songs, but as a complex phenomenon, at once musical, performative and above all media. On the basis of an interdisciplinary approach, the course will focus on some specific moments of the Festival, concentrating the analysis on songs, performers, performances, situations judged particularly representative for their historical, ideological, social and cultural implications.
The third part of the course is a seminar: students will present papers on topics of their choice related to the Festival (details will be provided at the beginning of the course).
