Period
Semester 1 dal Oct 3, 2022 al Jan 27, 2023.
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of biology and genetics of the principal model organisms, in relation to their use in the field of biology and biotechnology. During the course, the role of each model in the post-genomic era will be defined, describing the principal applications in contemporary research. Moreover, the most advanced methodologies for genetic manipulation currently applied in biomedical, pharmacological, and environmental areas, will be described.
Prerequisites and basic notions
General and cellular biology
Program
Description of the general characteristics of model organisms. Phylogenetic characterization and comparison of the most common model organisms used in biological and biotechnological research such as the yeasts S. cerevisiae and S. pompe, the protists Tetrahymena and Dictyostelium, the chlamydomonas, the plant A. thaliana, the nematode C. elegans, the insect Drosophila, the fish D. rerio, the amphibian Xenopus, the bird G. gallus, the mammal M. musculus. Analysis of the life and reproductive cycle of the main model organisms. Analysis of the characteristics of individual model organisms in relation to their use in genetic studies and biological and biotechnological research. Analysis of genetic and molecular tools and their applicability in different model organisms either in basic and translational research.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course will be carried out through lectures on the specific topics of the program, with the help of didactic material provided by the teacher. Nevertheless the use of original texts and articles for individual study is strongly recommended. Students will receive the complete calendar of teaching activities and the topics covered in each lesson. During the academic year, individual meeting with the teacher are available, by appointment.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam consists of a multiple-choice written test that will focus on the subjects covered during the course.
Evaluation criteria
The exam will give the student the opportunity of i) to determine the comprehension of the topics discussed during the lessons; ii) to assess the ability to link the acquired skills to potential applications in the biotechnological field.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The exam is organized to cover all the topics discussed during lessons in order to ascertain the level of knowledge reached by each student on the whole program. The exam method will be the same for attending and non-attending students.
