Learning objectives

The course aims at analyzing the complex interactions existing within the soil-plant-microorganism system in order to explore - in a multidisciplinary manner – eco-friendly and eco-sustainable strategies for the improvement of crop protection and production, the biological and integrated management of plant pathogens as well as for the bioremediation of polluted soils. Students will acquire a complete overview of the main soil physical and chemical properties, soil microbial taxonomic groups and how they can act in the interactions of plants with microbial pathogens. A particular attention will be paid on plant-beneficial microorganism interactions, with a focus on PGPR (Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria), endophytes, symbiotic nitrogen fixation and different mycorrhizal associations, as well as on plant-pathogen interactions, examining the concepts of pathogenicity and resistance.
