Learning outcomes

LABORATORY MEDICINE
At the end of the course the student will be able to apply choices and paths based on probabilistic criteria, usefulness and risk-benefit to the diagnostic process, being able to critically evaluate the Evidence-Based Medicine criteria (EBM). He/She will learn the value of Clinical Biochemistry on the diagnostic and therapeutic clinical decision making. The student will be finally able to guide the appropriate choice of laboratory tests and to correctly interpret their results, taking into account both interfering variables and confounding factors.

Program

The course will develop with classroom lessons held by the official teachers of the course. These lessons are held in the morning hours and deal with subjects of discipline. In the morning time slot (8:00 to 14:00) each student will participate for 6 hours at a series of exercises performed both in the classroom (with aid of audiovisual and / or portable equipment) and in different locals of the Laboratory, in order to acquire knowledge about the total testing process, its activities and complexities and the potential clinical implications. Activity will always be carried out explored with the ongoing support of a tutor.

Specific course program
Knowledge of the pathophysiologic mechanisms and the interpretation of laboratory tests related to individual organs and tissues, mainly referring to the following topics:
• Hemocromocytometric examination,
• Hemostasis system,
• Glucose metabolism and diabetes,
• Lipid metabolism, atherosclerotic disease and complications,
• Acid-base and ions imbalance,
• Plasma proteins and inflammatory indices,
• Renal function,
• Hepatic function,
• Acute myocardial infarction,
