Learning outcomes

The Respiratory Diseases course aims to provide students with an adequate knowledge relating to:
• diagnostic use of respiratory symptoms, interpreted in relation to their physiogenesis
• pathophysiology and systematic nosography of thoraco-respiratory diseases
• diagnostic procedures and their indications in diseases of the respiratory system.

Program

Respiratory function test
• ventilatory function test, alveolus-capillary diffusion of CO, bronchial provocation test.

Respiratory failure (RF)
• Define and classify the RF, detailing its diagnostic methods
• Illustrate the pathophysiological mechanisms of acute and chronic IR
• List the pathological conditions responsible for the development of acute and chronic IR
• Recognize the patient with RF on the basis of the clinicl exam and interpret the symptoms of hypoxemia and hypercapnia
• Plan the investigations to be carried out to identify the causes of RF and indicate the elements useful for prognostic purposes
• Indicate the principles and methods of oxygen therapy

Respiratory disorders during sleep, with special reference to OSA (Obstructive apnea syndrome)
• Classify the main forms of respiratory disorders during sleep
• Describe essential epidemiological data
• Illustrate the most important pathophysiological mechanisms
• List the risk factors
• Describe the clinical picture
• Plan essential investigations for diagnosis

Chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma and pulmonary emphysema
• Classify chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, highlighting their distinctive features from a physiopathological and clinical point of view
• Describe essential epidemiological data
• Enumerate the risk factors
• Illustrate pathogenesis and pathophysiology
• Describe the pathological anatomy by emphasizing the anatomical-functional correlations
• Describe symptoms and natural history
• Plan the investigations necessary for diagnosis and functional evaluation

Brochiectasis
• Define and classify bronchiectasis on an etiological basis (congenital, acquired, poststenotic)
• Indicate, also taking into account the etiology, the preferred location of bronchiectasis
• Describe the clinical picture of bronchiectasis and justify the pathophysiological symptoms
• List the investigations aimed at identifying bronchiectasis and evaluating the extent
• Illustrate the principles of medical and physiotherapeutic therapy of bronchiectasis
• Identify patients in whom surgical treatment is necessary and feasible

Interstitial lung disease
• Define and classify the interstitial diseases
• List the ten most frequent morbid forms
• Describe etiopathogenesis, pathology, clinical forms and diagnostic methodology of interstitial pneumonitis (with particular regard to idiopathic interstitial fibrosis) and of pulmonary sarcoidosis
• Recognize the cardinal symptoms of interstitial lung diseases associated with collagenopathy

Hypersensitivity pneumonia
• Describe the pathogenesis and pathology and identify the three etiological agents most frequently causing the disease
• Describe the pivotal symptoms of the farmer's lung

Acute bronchitis and bacterial, viral, fungal pneumonia
• List the etiological agents and describe the symptoms of acute bronchitis
• Describe the epidemiology and list the etiological agents of extra-hospital and hospital acquired pneumonia
