Learning outcomes

Course objectives:
The course aims to provide students with the cognitive and methodological tools necessary for:
• understanding physio-pathological bases of Medical Oncology;
• understanding the biological bases and the role of anticancer drug therapies;
• recognizing and interpreting anatomical symptoms and signs, functional alterations and general symptoms;
• recognizing the phases of the neoplastic disease by prescribing cytological, histological and immuno-histochemical tests, integrating them into the diagnostic synthesis and the related prognosis definition;
• identifing the possibilities of intervention in order to promptly address the patient to the specialist;
• diagnosing and treating the main neoplastic pathologies;
• recognizing and interpret the symptoms of the terminal phase and identifing the possibilities assistance for the terminally ill patient and his/her family;
• allowing the right relationship and communication between doctors and patients.

Program

Students will be able to:
• define the features of a screening and describe the possibilities of the different cancer screenings;
• list the main warning signs and symptoms due to cancer presence;
• adopt diagnostic, laboratory and instrumental procedures where there are signs or clinical symptoms due cancer;
• identify the useful and necessary elements for the definition of the cancer stage;
• discuss treatments according to the development of a neoplasia, the stage and the prognostic factors;
• define the criteria underlying the choice of the different anticancer medical therapies;
• list the main classes of substances that can be used according to the different categories of anticancer medical therapies;
• recognize the most frequent side effects due to the anticancer medical therapy;
• detect the main complications of cancer (infections, effusions, compressions, etc.);
• identify the most characteristic signs or symptoms of oncological emergencies and indicate the chances of action;
• communicate the diagnosis to the patient and his/her family members, adapting the message according to the patient's characteristics and the related prognosis;
• recognize the patient’s and his family members possible psychological issues;
• use palliative treatments (antalgic therapy, support therapy, etc.)
