Program

The opening section of the course will focus on the long path towards a humanization of medicine in the age of an essentially technology-driven approach to the reality of cure. We will try to answer to the following questions: “what is care?”, and “what does care relation mean?”, We will then move to a detailed analysis of the meaning and the subject of bioethics and its two leading paradigms of normative ethics, axiology and consequentialism, the two different visions of the meaning of the human person they entail, and the consequences in terms of opposite solutions to the questions of begin- and end-of-life. We will then move to a thorough analysis of begin-of-life bioethics, also in view of the new discoveries concerning the usage of human embryos, and with an in-depth panoramic view on end-of-life bioethics, including palliative care, choice of curing, and euthanasia, with special regard to the law 219/2017 and the 242/2019 ruling of the Italian Supreme Court. We will then investigate possible (bio)ethical alternative paradigms, such as virtue ethics and how it can be employed in the nursing profession (what does it mean to be “a good nurse”?). the next part will deal with the disruptive revolution brought about by the massive introduction of artificial intelligence within medical care, with its risks and opportunities, and the necessity to rethink curing and caring as we currently know them. The course will end with the analysis of particularly relevant case studies concerning the nurse profession.

Didactic methods

Classes will be held exclusively in presence, without any resorting to emergency online teaching. Students with special needs may ask the teacher to organise their activities in a different way.Classes include lecturing and texts reading (complete or partial). Texts will be explained, and they can belong to different ages and/or authors. Reading may include multi-media supports, such as Power Point slides or movie or video projections. Slides, in particular, are examination texts, and will be made available to students only at the end of the course.
External academics or experts may also be invited to give a presentation.
Any change or suspension in the classes schedule will be communicated as soon as possible by email sent to the students’ institutional accounts.
Meeting hours for students are scheduled during the whole academic year. The meetings’ timetable is found at the personal webpage of the teacher, and it is constantly kept updated. However, students are required to arrange a meeting in advance by sending an email to the teacher.
The course program remains the same for non-attending students too. The professor is always ready to be helpful and provide all the necessary support.

Learning assessment procedures

The final test consists of an oral examination for all students (including those who did not attend the classes), comprising up to three questions concerning the topics of the classes.
The examination aims to ascertain a) the level of knowledge acquired by students, b) the level of their acquired competences, and c) the properness of their ways of expressing their knowledge and competences.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

In the oral examination, each question scores up to 10 points: 4 for the level of knowledge and competences respectively, and 2 for the properness of language.
The final overall mark of the course (including all three modules) will result from the weighted average of the mark of each module.
