Learning outcomes
The course aims to investigate the critical situations that may occur in the various care settings at the hospital. It describes the monitoring interventions of clinical evolution, the support of impaired functions and the prevention of complications.
Program
•The critical area and the critically ill patient: definitions of critical/intensive patient, urgency/emergency, intensive care, the peculiarities in care
•Monitoring and management of respiratory function: definition of acute respiratory failure and main causes, main indications of mechanical ventilation, advantages and disadvantages of invasive and non-invasive ventilation, aids used in invasive and non-invasive ventilation, care interventions for the intubated/tracheostomized/in non-invasive ventilation patient
•Hemodynamic monitoring: definition of heart failure, cardiovascular decompensation, shock and main causes, main indications for invasive hemodynamic monitoring, invasive monitoring of blood pressure, monitoring of central venous pressure, correlating complex intravenous pharmacological treatments to the patient's clinical situation, identifying and describe expected effects and adverse effects of complex intravenous treatments, calculation exercises on the main drugs used in the critical area
• Neurological function monitoring: evaluation indicators of neurological function
• Nutritional approach to the critically ill patient: assessment of nutritional status, nutrition management and possible complications
• The hygiene of the critically ill patient and the prevention of infections: hemodynamic changes, oral hygiene, eye care
• Impact of the stay in intensive care and ways to promote the patient's adaptation and family needs
• Communicaion with family members in condition of complete isolation
