Learning outcomes

------------------------
MM: STATISTICA MEDICA ED EPIDEMIOLOGIA CLINICA
------------------------
The aim of the course "Medical statistics and clinical epidemiology" is to provide the theoretical and practical tools for assessing the frequency of diseases in human populations and the associated risk factors. The course therefore aims to provide expertise in epidemiology and bio-statistics. At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to have understood the basic bio-statistical methods applied to epidemiology and the elements of an epidemiological study.
------------------------
MM: METODOLOGIA DELL'ASSISTENZA OSTETRICA BASATA SULLE EVIDENZE
------------------------
The student, at the end of the course, will be able to ask himself questions about obstetric care and will know how to look for scientific evidences and translate them in Evidence Based Practices, in relation to the operational contest and to the professional experience.
------------------------
MM: INFORMATICA APPLICATA ALLA RICERCA DELLA LETTERATURA
------------------------
The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge on biomedical studies, bibliometric analysis and the main IT tools for bibliographic research, making he/she autonomous in the search for literature through the use of specialized journal web sites, multidisciplinary databases (eg Web of Science and Scopus) and biomedical database (eg Medline and Cochrane Lybrary). The skills and knowledges acquired will be useful both for the preparation of the thesis and in a perspective of lifelong learning. KNOWLEDGES: • Fundamental knowledges for identifying publications, sources and authors. • Fundamental knowledges for searching publications through IT tools • Basic knowledge on bibliometric analysis • Knowledge of the main databases and / or web sites used in the research of biomedical literature SKILLS: • Set up an effective research strategy with IT tools • Search for a specific publication • Search for publications related to one or more authors or specific sources • Calculation of the main bibliometric indices • Perform a search by type or design of the study • How to increase the sensitivity or specificity of bibliographic research

The course is structured in theoretical frontal lessons (24h). Collection and organization of biomedical data: - stages of a statistical research; - population, sample and statistical units; - measurement process and measurement scales; - validity, accuracy and precision of a measuring instrument; - absolute, relative and cumulative frequencies; - one and two-way frequency tables. Graphical representation of biomedical data: - pie chart; - bar chart; - histogram; - cumulative frequency polygon. Measures of location and dispersion: - mode; - percentiles and median; - simple and weighted arithmetic mean; - range; - interquartile range; - deviance, variance and standard deviation; - coefficient of variation. An introduction to probability theory: - definition of probability; - axiomatic theory of probabilities; - rules of probability calculation; - independent and conditional probabilities; - Bernoulli and Gauss distributions. Diagnostic and screening tests: - sensitivity and specificity. The objects of epidemiology: - outcome; - measures of disease frequency (prevalence, cumulative incidence, incidence rate); - determinant. The occurrence relationship: - measures of absolute effect (attributable risk); - measures of relative effect (relative risk, odds ratio). The epidemiological studies: - ecological study; - cross-sectional study; - case-control study; - cohort study; - clinical trial. An introduction to statistical inference: - point estimate; - confidence interval; - statistical test.

Examination Methods

The final test consists of 3 exams, one for each unit. To pass the final test, the student must get a score of not less than 18/30 in each exam. The final mark (in thirtieths) is the average of the 3 scores.

The exam consists of a written test aimed to verify the degree of learning of the knowledges and skills which are the goal of the course. The test will consist of exercises that can be solved using a computer connected to the university network, questions with free-text answers and multiple choice questions. Each exercise/question will be associated with a score (reported in the text of the exam) The maximum score achievable is 32 points. To pass the course the student must obtain a minimum score of 18 points. The final grade corresponds to the sum of the scores obtained for each exercise/question up to a maximum of 30. In order to obtain the grade of excellence (30 cum laude) the student must have answered correctly and comprehensively all the exercises/questions proposed (test score of 32 points) . The student can take every exam session and he can take it again as many time as he/she like (within the end of academic year). The student, that have achieved a positive test evaluation, must communicate to the professor if he/she accepts the evaluation or , at the contrary, he/she want to repeat the test. If the student take the test again, delivering the answers to the professor, the evaluation of the previous test will be lost definitively.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
